Outstanding Screenplays TV Pilot Competition
This film could be a summer rom-com hit for a major studio or a large indie like A24.
“Aspergerers” is a quirky romantic comedy centered on Sally, a sharp-tongued, 40-something aspiring dog walker, and Barry, a socially awkward astrophysicist both with possible Asperger’s. After a chaotic, comedic encounter at the beach, the two form a bond built on bizarre banter, awkward honesty, and reluctant attraction. Sally lives with her overbearing mother and struggles with direction, while Barry balances his eccentricities, a flirty gay friend, and his grandfather’s dementia. Through a string of wild mishaps (dog chases, fake accidents, flamboyant golf outings, and confrontations with scammers), their unconventional romance grows. Despite their differences, Sally and Barry find common ground in their emotional baggage, dry wit, and
genuine need for connection."
“Aspergerers” is a hilariously atypical romcom that explores the complexities of love, family, and self-discovery from the unique perspective of two neurodivergent, socially challenged (and challenging) eccentrics. With a broadly appealing vibe, similar to "Bridesmaids" and "The 40-Year-Old Virgin", this comedy will resonate with a massive, mainstream audience while appealing especially to LGBTQ+ audiences and those who appreciate stories about non-traditional families. The script mixes raunchy humor, heartfelt moments, and absurdist gags in equal measure, constantly surprising and escalating. Whether it’s Sally stealing money from the table or outrageous celebrity cameos, the scenes rarely go where you expect. The offbeat humor sets a dynamic tone right from the first page. Sally’s snarky, rapid-fire quips and Barry’s literal, neurodivergent logic create delightful comedic friction. The negging asper-banter of their first accidental “date” feels at times like an Ionesco play. The humor also feels personal, grounded in character, even at its most absurd (e.g., Sally threatening a scammer with a baseball bat or Barry reciting Wikipedia entries mid-convo). Even with Asperger’s in the title, the script avoids sentimentalizing or pathologizing neurodiversity, instead letting it be part of the humor and heart. Their conditions take a back seat to deeper, universal truths and emotional honesty with moments of real vulnerability: Barry caring for his grandfather, Sally’s insecurity masked by bravado, and both characters grappling with loneliness. That balance between comedy and emotional grounding makes the absurdity feel earned. This film could be a summer rom-com hit for a major studio or a large indie like A24.

ScreenCraft Critique Aspergerers:
"This is a really lovely script, and it immediately stands out as unique. First of all, your voice as a writer comes through beautifully. There are a unique tone and humor here, and that is something a writer even has or they don't have. It's pretty rare to find, and it gives you a great advantage. You have a natural sense of comedy and know how to navigate comedic situations. That shows throughout the script. Not only is the dialogue funny, but the scenes and actions are as well....This script makes me really excited about your future."

"There is clearly a great comedic voice here, your main strength certainly lies in writing funny exchanges and comedy seems to come natural to you."

InRoads Critique Aspergerers:
"The writer does a solid job of fleshing these two out with flashbacks as we really get a great sense of who these two are from the moment they meet. I like that we dive a bit into Asperger syndrome but never make it the sole focus as it comes through the characters rather than the other way around. There’s just a clear tone and atmosphere created by the writer that is evocative and immersive. A huge reason for this is because of how the interactions between Sally and Barry feel quirky and unique as the dialogue between them feels genuine and authentic with how they’ve been built up as characters. With the constant Wikipedia references from Barry to Sally’s assertive and dominating personality, you really get a great sense through the dialogue of who these characters are and how organic and natural they come across."

"I think your dialogue is one of the high points of this script. Witty, sarcastic, whimisical and even borderline fantastical and absurd at times, the dialogue — especially Sally’s — keeps the pages turning."

The Aspergerers
The Golden Script Review by "Jimmy".
THE GOLDEN SCRIPT Critique Aspergerers:
"This is the first romantic comedy that I've seen in months. It lifts our spirits. You can make us feel something positive because your story is all about exploiting negative emotion and turning them into positive. I love how you play with flashbacks. You don't intend to dwell on them. Especially for Barry. You do it amazingly. You tell so much in a short sentence. For me that was really exciting. Really fun. It's something that felt natural. One of my favorite moments is when Barry says all the bad things about Sally and then says that's why he loves her. It's one of the most important scenes for me. I loved it. What I love about your story is that you make the backstory so tragic - these characters were hurt sometime before - while the present timeline is happy and comedic. It makes us feel good about ourselves."

Filmmatic Comedy Screenplay Awards (Season 10)
"What you're really saying with this film, beneath the gags and the glorious chaos, is that connection is a form of bravery. You see, Barry and Sally are bott emotionally misfit in totally different ways. He's literal and rigid, she’s impulsive and reactive, but they orbit the same fundamental ache: the fear of being misunderstood. You can say that their neurodivergence, codependency, parental trauma, all of it builds to this deeper truth that love isn’t about perfect understanding, it’s about showing up anyway. The recurring motif of 'chips and salsa' becomes more than just a punchline—these two don’t match, they complement. Barry’s stargazing and love for pattern (math as music, music as order) kind of contrasts Sally’s whirlwind improvisation. It's like you’re playing with the idea that structure and spontaneity are two languages of love. Even Barry’s piano playing—unrehearsed, untrained—is his soul leaking out despite his brain. And Sally’s madness is like a defense against rejection. The real metaphor, to me, is that both of them are 'off'—but in ways that fill in each other’s gaps. You’re not writing a traditionalromcom; you’re writing about two people slowly granting each other permission to be unfiltered. And weirdly, that’s the most romantic thing of all. I do have a few minor suggestions that I'd like to share with you that might help you dial up the emotive strength of the film. But I've scored the film highly because it's still way above average."
